Ben Van Every, CEO of Algorithm Coding Experts (ALGO), appeared on ARE Business, a programme on Radio Libertad in Madrid hosted by Roberto Rodríguez Manzaneque, to discuss how businesses can turn artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies into measurable operational improvements and business results.

During the interview, Ben shared his perspective on the evolution of artificial intelligence, the opportunities it presents for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the importance of approaching technological transformation from a business perspective.

The conversation also covered cybersecurity, blockchain, fintech and algorithmic trading, areas in which ALGO develops engineering solutions for its clients.

From Using AI to Integrating It into Business Operations

One of the central messages of the interview was that using artificial intelligence tools does not necessarily mean transforming a business.

Many organisations already use ChatGPT, AI assistants and small-scale automation to improve productivity. However, as Ben explained, the real transformation begins when artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of a company’s operational processes.

This means connecting AI to corporate data, integrating it with existing software systems and deploying it to achieve specific, measurable outcomes: reducing errors, accelerating processes, increasing operational capacity, improving customer service or generating additional sales.

The objective is not to introduce artificial intelligence simply because the technology is available, but to solve business problems that genuinely matter.

AI for SMEs: Start Small, but Think Big

During the conversation, Roberto raised a particularly relevant question for Spanish businesses: how can small and medium-sized companies benefit from these technologies without committing to excessively complex or expensive projects?

Ben explained that the starting point should always be identifying a genuine business need.

Where are too many errors occurring? Which activities require excessive manual information gathering? Where is time being lost? Where are customers or sales opportunities being missed?

Once the problem has been identified, ALGO recommends starting with a clearly defined use case that is technically manageable but sufficiently important to make a meaningful difference if successfully addressed.

The next step is to implement the solution, measure its performance and, if it delivers the expected value, progressively expand its scope.

This approach allows SMEs to adopt AI incrementally without needing to transform their entire organisation from the outset.

Agentic AI: Autonomy, Human Oversight and Security

Another important topic was the development of artificial intelligence systems capable of taking actions rather than simply generating information or answering questions.

Ben emphasised that not all AI applications carry the same level of risk.

An AI system that drafts a response for human review is fundamentally different from one that can initiate payments, update a CRM or execute actions directly within a company’s systems.

For this reason, the level of autonomy granted to an AI system should reflect the requirements and risks of the process it supports.

This involves establishing appropriate permissions, access controls, operational boundaries and human oversight where the potential consequences of an error justify additional safeguards.

At ALGO, the objective is not to achieve the maximum possible autonomy, but the appropriate level of autonomy for each application.

Autonomy and trust must develop together.

ALGO as an Engineering Partner: From Concept to Operations

Ben also explained how ALGO works with companies looking to develop or integrate advanced technological solutions.

The company positions itself as an engineering partner supporting clients throughout the technology lifecycle, from defining the problem and designing the architecture through development, integration, testing, deployment and operations.

This approach begins with an ongoing dialogue to understand the client’s actual needs and define a solution aligned with its business objectives.

Rather than focusing exclusively on individual projects, ALGO aims to establish long-term client relationships in which successful initial implementations create opportunities for further improvements and technological development.

Although artificial intelligence currently represents a significant area of activity, ALGO also delivers projects involving blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, cybersecurity, fintech and other advanced engineering disciplines.

Algorithmic Trading and Fintech: Engineering for Real-World Financial Markets

The interview also explored algorithmic trading, one of ALGO’s areas of technical expertise.

Ben explained that ALGO has an experienced team working in this field, delivering projects involving market and data connectivity, trading infrastructure, algorithm development, trade execution, optimisation and risk management.

He also made an important distinction: ALGO provides engineering and technology development services, not investment advice.

The engineering process requires clients to define their trading strategies and operational rules with sufficient precision for them to be translated into executable software.

The objective is to develop systems capable of operating reliably in real market conditions, with the necessary technical components properly integrated.

Blockchain and Stablecoins: Applications Beyond Cryptocurrencies

Discussing developments in financial services, Ben highlighted the potential of blockchain and stablecoins to support new approaches to payments and financial transfers.

Potential applications include cross-border payments, micropayments and transactions that may benefit from faster processing and lower costs.

He also explained that blockchain is particularly relevant where there is a specific need for trust, identity verification, traceability or auditability.

Once again, the question is not whether an organisation should adopt a particular technology because it is new, but whether that technology offers an appropriate solution to a clearly identified problem.

Cybersecurity: Technology, Processes and Employee Awareness

Cybersecurity was another significant part of the discussion.

Ben emphasised that cyber threats continue to evolve and that effective organisational security requires a combination of technical controls, internal policies and employee awareness.

The practices discussed included identifying and assessing risks, training employees to recognise suspicious emails and attachments, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing and code reviews designed to identify potential security weaknesses.

He also explained how compliance frameworks and certifications can help organisations establish clearer internal structures for managing security risks.

Security becomes even more important as companies introduce artificial intelligence into operational workflows.

The greater the authority given to an AI system, the more important it becomes to control its permissions, identities, access rights and actions.

For ALGO, effective AI engineering therefore involves considering security and governance alongside functionality and performance.

The Future of Work: Fewer Repetitive Tasks, More Human Judgement

Towards the end of the interview, Roberto and Ben discussed how artificial intelligence could reshape the organisation of work.

Ben suggested that AI-driven automation would reduce many repetitive tasks, manual information-gathering activities and administrative processes.

At the same time, he highlighted the growing importance of professional judgement, creativity, supervision and direct human interaction with customers, patients and citizens.

In this context, the challenge for businesses goes beyond implementing artificial intelligence tools.

Organisations also need to reconsider how work is structured, which activities can be automated and where human involvement remains essential.

The opportunity is not simply to perform existing tasks faster, but to rethink how people, processes and technology work together.
